Nifty Near a 52-Week Low: How Gold Compares With the Nifty and FDs

Gold is about a third higher than it was a year ago. The Nifty 50 is down almost 13.6%. In 2026 alone, gold is down 1.55% year-to-date, while the Nifty is down 14.19%. Neither number is the whole story. Gold is also roughly 17% below its January high and slipped 1.76% last week, which is why “stabiliser” is the right word for it and “safe bet” is not.

This guide covers what has happened, why gold tends to behave differently from equities, how gold, the Nifty and a bank FD compare after tax and inflation, and what gold cannot do.

How Far Has the Nifty Fallen, and Is It at Its 52-Week Low?

On 5 October 2026, the Nifty 50 stood at 22,452.40. That is about 1.2% above its 52-week low of 22,182.55 and about 15% below its 52-week high of 26,373.20. It has now closed lower for eight straight weeks, a run last seen in 2001. Zerodha’s note adds that forward returns following such streaks have mostly been positive, though past performance does not guarantee future results.

1 year−9.72%
3 years+14.17% (about 4.5% a year*)
5 years+27.89% (about 5.0% a year*)

These are price returns, so they exclude dividends. Over the past five years, the index has returned roughly 5% per year before dividends, which is in the same range as a bank FD.

Why Is the Nifty Falling? What FPI Selling, Oil and US Yields Have to Do With It

The reasons reported are mostly external:

  • Foreign selling. FPIs sold a record $24.6 billion of Indian equities through August 2026 and pulled out a further ₹33,864 crore in September.
  • Oil and the rupee. Crude has hovered near $100, and the rupee has also traded around ₹95-96 against the US dollar.
  • US yields. The US 10-year is about 5.3%, and the 30-year is above 5.6%, the highest since 2002, which makes India harder for global investors to allocate to.
  • Weather. The monsoon was the driest since 2015, with rainfall 12.6% below normal.

Growth itself has not broken. Domestic investors have kept buying, with a record $177 billion invested over 24 months and SIP flows above ₹30,000 crore a month.

Has Gold Really Held Up While the Nifty Fell?

Yes, over a year and over 2026 so far, but not over the last few weeks.

Gold’s own year has been uneven. Domestic gold rose 12% in August to ₹1,58,854 per 10 g, then fell 4.6% by 11 September. Internationally, it went from above $5,500 an ounce in January to about $4,100 in mid-June.

Why Does Gold Move Differently From the Nifty?

There are four reasons to note:

1) It runs on different drivers

WGC’s India research finds that gold’s negative correlation with equities tends to strengthen during sell-offs, while it often shows a positive correlation when markets rise. Correlation also shifts over time. Zerodha’s Sandeep Rao notes that since 2025, gold and the Nifty have moved more in the same direction. Think of gold as a diversifier, not a mirror image.

2) A weaker rupee lifts its rupee price

Gold is priced in dollars, and WGC notes that periods of rupee depreciation tend to amplify rises in gold prices. If you want to see how currency moves flow into returns for an Indian holder, read How a Rising Dollar Is Changing Gold Returns for Indian Investors in 2026.

3) It responds to inflation, but also to yields

CPI inflation was 4.82% in August 2026, the highest since December 2024, with food at 5.95%. Rising yields cut the other way, because a metal that pays no interest competes with assets that now pay more. 4) Investors turn to it when uncertainty rises

Indian gold ETF inflows were ₹25.97 billion in August (up 67% month-on-month), and digital gold purchases were 110% higher than a year earlier. If you want to see how gold behaved during India’s earlier sell-offs, read “What Happens to Gold Prices During a Market Crash?

Gold vs Nifty 50 vs FD: How Do They Compare After Tax and Inflation?

WGC’s March 2026 India report found that despite growth above 7%, Indian equities and bonds delivered muted returns. Here is how each option works on the same footing.

The FD after tax and inflation (SBI general-public rate for 2 to under 3 years, 6.40%, per Paisabazaar, Oct 2026; CPI 4.82%, August 2026):

So an FD protects the rupee amount, but at the 30% slab it slightly trails inflation. The Nifty’s five-year price return is in a similar range, with far more volatility along the way. Gold pays no yield, so its return is just the change in price.

What Gold Can’t Do: The Limits Of a Hedge

  • It falls too. It dropped roughly a quarter between January and mid-June 2026 and sits about 17% below its high today.
  • It can move with equities. Both fell last week: gold 1.76% and the Nifty 3.11%.
  • Higher yields are a headwind. Gold pays no interest, and US yields are at multi-year highs.
  • It has costs. There is 3% GST on purchase.
  • It sits outside SEBI and RBI oversight. At SafeGold, the protection comes from the structure: Brink’s vaults and Vistra ITCL auditing every gram.

How Much Gold Do Researchers Suggest Holding Alongside Equity and Debt?

WGC tested a hypothetical Indian mix of 70% equity and 30% fixed income over 19 years. Replacing equal portions of each with 7.5%- 15% gold improved risk-adjusted returns and reduced drawdowns. WGC calls this a strategic allocation, not a tactical bet, and notes that diversification does not guarantee returns. Conclusion

Over the past year, gold and the Nifty have behaved differently, which is the case for holding a little of both. That difference is not a guarantee. Gold is about 17% below its January high. It fell alongside the Nifty last week, and it pays no income. What it offers is a different set of drivers, and a rule-based way to accumulate grams without timing the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is the Nifty at its lowest level ever?

A. No. On 5 October 2026, the Nifty 50 was at 22,452.40, about 1.2% above its 52-week low of 22,182.55 and about 15% below its 52-week high of 26,373.20.

Q. Should I buy gold when the Nifty falls?

A. A falling Nifty is not, by itself, a reliable signal for gold. Last week, both fell, and the reason for the equity decline matters more than the decline itself. For many people, the practical question is how to hold gold without guessing the moment. A fixed amount on a fixed schedule removes that decision, because a lower price buys more grams and a higher price buys fewer. Your goals and horizon decide what fits, and this is not investment advice.

Q. Does gold always rise when the stock market falls?

A. No. Gold fell 1.76% last week alongside the Nifty, sits about 17% below its January high, and dropped roughly a quarter between January and mid-June. WGC says the negative correlation tends to strengthen in sell-offs, but correlation shifts over time.

Q. Is gold better than an FD right now?

A. They do different jobs. SBI’s 2–3 year FD pays 6.40%, about 4.40% after tax at the 30% slab, against 4.82% inflation. Gold pays nothing to hold, and its return is the price change. Neither is better on every measure.

Q. How much of my money should be in gold?

A. WGC’s 19-year test of a hypothetical 70/30 Indian mix found 7.5% to 15% gold improved risk-adjusted returns and lowered drawdowns. That is hypothetical research, not a recommendation, and your own number depends on your goals.

Q. Is gold a hedge against inflation and rupee depreciation?

A. Partly. WGC notes that rupee depreciation tends to amplify the rupee price of gold, and gold has historically been used as an inflation hedge. Rising yields can offset both, so it is a tendency rather than a rule.

Q. Is digital gold regulated?

A. Digital gold sits outside SEBI and RBI oversight and has no deposit insurance. At SafeGold, the gold is held in Brink’s vaults, and Vistra ITCL audits that every gram in every account is matched by physical gold.
